That's Really Week congratulates the Beastie Boys for releasing this week's standout album, "Hot Sauce Committee Part 2." Not only is their eighth album incredible, it marks a significant accomplishment. It was completed as the legendary rappers braved the news that MCA was diagnosed with cancer in his salivary glands.
MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D received the news in the summer of 2009 as they prepped for a European tour to promote "Hot Sauce Committee." When MCA felt a lump on the side of his neck, he met with his doctor, and was referred to a specialist who ran tests and delivered the bad news.
"That sent us all reeling," Mike D told Rolling Stone, "both in terms of having your good friend and your bandmate diagnosed with cancer, and then also, oh, so our record isn't coming out. We'll just put this on hold and see where we're at in six months. And then 12 months."
The album delay actually produced positive results. After giving the album another listen, the group decided to move in a different direction. They solicited remixing assists from producer Philippe Zdar, and ultimately felt happier with the results.
In January, MCA said in a statement on the group's website, that he was "optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future." In the meantime, he is still undergoing treatment.
Despite not being able to tour or participate in all of the album promotion, MCA can take the credit for writing and directing the 30-minute film "Fight For Your Right (Revisited)" that enlists two sets of A-list actors portraying past and future versions of the New York MCs. The project commemorates the 25th anniversary of the release of their "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" video.
The hilarious "Make Some Noise" video is an excerpt from the film.
The Beastie Boys weren't the only ones taking a trip down memory lane this week. Marie Osmond re-married her first husband, whom she first wed nearly 30 years ago. Katy Perry revealed to Vanity Fair magazine details of her sheltered upbringing. Beyoncé went back to junior high school for a day. And Lady Gaga explored biblical times for the storyline of her latest controversial video, "Judas."
While we love celebrating the past, we're looking forward to getting back to the future next week. See you then.
